A nice trip to the park, where Magnus showed off his ability to climb up the big slide and then slide back down.

Elina joined us on a trip out to Trout Lake today. We went to see cool stuff and get more huckleberries. Elina got really excited upon seeing this cliff, exclaiming “Columnar Basalt!” Last year when I came here, I knew it was some thing she should see. We also had fun relaxing by a waterfall and seeing the Lava Bridge. We ended our trip by getting huckleberry milkshakes at the cafĂ© in Trout Lake, so very delicious. We even made it back in time for our ward BBQ. Good Day Indeed.

Ruth made these cookies for our ward BBQ tomorrow night. They are called Root Beer Cookies. And they were very delicious.

Vancouver has a soda shop. Dana heard about it today at work and right after dinner we went over to check it out. Dana loves soda and this place had a pretty wide selection, focusing mostly on locally made sodas. I picked out the jersey cream and the birch beer and Dana got the strawberry and vanilla bean sodas. Because we showed up around closing time, they also gave us some free nachos (woohoo!).

I took too long getting Magnus into his chair this afternoon, so he went ahead and got into Dana’s. Dana wasn’t there to displace him so he stayed there during his meal.

I took this early in the morning right after we had woken up. It does not represent the day, but it’s the only picture I took all day.
One of our neighbors had his birthday today. He turned 3. His family is Pulauan and they make lots of yummy food. They had chicken and beef and oysters (on the grill: they were amazing) and pork and fish. We stayed out there most of the afternoon and evening eating and playing. It was good times.

We gave Magnus an ice cream cone tonight. He had markedly less success with it than his first time.
Also this picture reminds me of a Calvin and Hobbes comic.

Dana drove us up to the top of this huge mountain to appreciate the view. But then when we got up there it was covered in huckleberries! Luckily we had a container and brought home some. Magnus helped out with the picking by sampling the berries and making sure they were safe for us. What a great boy!

Magnus wanted to go on a walk today. We went to the park and played on the slide. On the way home someone had put a sprinkler out on their lawn. Magnus had to run through it several times and was pretty upset when I made him leave. Poor Magnus!

We got this shelf for free and I painted it purple. Here it is half way done. Now I know that I’m not a fan of spray paint.

County Fair! We love the fair. Magnus loved seeing all the animals (especially the llamas) and the doggies. There was a dog show going on. We ended the night with elephant ears. Yay for the fair!

We gave the cars baths today. Magnus liked helping and got quite dirty. I stayed mostly clean until Elina sprayed me with the hose. Thanks, Elina.

Dana got Magnus this little turtle stuffed animal. They’re pals. Magnus likes to give it hugs. And kisses.

Because of the recent hot weather and our lack of air conditioning, we have gotten our fans out. That’s all well and good except for Magnus’s paralyzing fear of the fans. He couldn’t even walk past one when it was off to get to us. Until Dana taught him he could stand in front of it and yell making your voice sound funny. Now the fans pose no emotional threat.

We drove down to Salem today to escape the heat. Chuck the dog was there and Magnus was happy to see him.

Dana is a bit of a vanilla fiend. His mom got us some vanilla beans one year for Christmas and we rationed them, just using them all up a few weeks ago. You can buy them in the grocery store but they're about 3-4 dollars per bean. If you buy them online (and you buy 20 or so) they come out to be 1$ a piece. Ours arrived in the mail today and Dana is very excited!

I have been meaning to make sushi ever since my mom brought me a sushi rolling mat and a sesame seed grinder. Today I finally got around to it. I didn’t use any raw fish but they were very good. They were, however, very labor intensive and tricky to get to stay together.

Dana’s sister, Elina, recently rearranged her bedroom. Here we are appreciating the new set-up. Magnus especially liked the accessibility of the keyboard. He played us some songs and danced to some of the prerecorded demos.

We have great neighbors. There is one little boy about to turn 3 that likes to play with Magnus. Sometimes he comes and makes faces at Magnus through our front window, which always makes them laugh.

I took too long preparing dinner tonight so Magnus commandeered my chair and demanded food by slapping his hand on my plate. Dana fed him cherries until the meal was finished. This was Dana’s view from across the table.

Sunday night at Farmor’s house. Dana’s sister-in-law’s parents recently returned from their mission to the Philippines and gave their homecoming talks today. We went to their early church to hear them speak and say hello.

We found out that the Grist Mill in Woodland was having a free blueberry pancake day, so we had to go. It was a beautiful day and there were a lot of people there. The pancakes were also very good. They ground their own flour for the mix and had blueberry syrup from scratch. They were also demonstrating the milling process and giving out bags of freshly ground grains. We got some bread flour and white flour. Then my sister, Elina, surprised us by showing up with some of her friends. So we got to hang out with her a bit. It was a good day in the countryside.

Magnus and I took a walk down to Fort Vancouver today. Magnus liked running down the hill and playing with various rocks and plants he found along the way. Here he is taking a spontaneous dance break.

My visiting teacher came today and brought me this nice coaster with the Portland Temple on it. I think it’s too pretty to use as originally intended.
