Dana is particularly good at getting Magnus to eat food at dinnertime.

It’s been pretty cold for the last week or so, which means it’s gotten below freezing regularly. Dana went out this morning and took pictures of the frost and this thick fog. This frozen spider web was particularly impressive.

Magnus and I went with Elina and some of her friends to a dog show in Portland today. We got to see some of the agility trials and some of the scary breeders and their coiffed doggies. Magnus liked the part where you got to “Meet the Breed” and people with the same kind of dog brought them over for you to pet. Magnus like the Dalmatians. One of the breeders gave him a little pamphlet that said, “Owning a Dalmatian” on the front and (naturally) a picture of the dog. Magnus would point at the picture and then point at the dogs. He’s a fan.

Magnus got a tent for Christmas and we set it up in this bedroom. Sometimes he demands our presence in it. Tonight Dana and Magnus got in the tent and watched videos on the cell phone. Good times for all.

Getting Magnus to fall asleep has been a bit of a battle. Today we discovered a secret. He likes to read in bed. We will add this to our bag of tricks.

Magnus built himself this thing out of Duplos. Only once he started using it did we know it was a camera phone. See the eyepiece?

We drove up to Tacoma today. Along the way we stopped in Olympia and visited the State house. We just happened to be there during the Governor’s state of the state address, so that was kind of cool.
After that we drove out to a state park called Flaming Geyser. It sounds pretty cool, but the guide books assured us it was not very impressive. Once we accepted that, we actually had a good time. And there is still a flaming geyser, though it only reaches about 4 inches. It was very cold, but we had fun seeing the fire (which it a lit pocket of methane) and ice encrusting the playground equipment.
We then drove to Tacoma and saw the Tacoma-Narrows bridge (it’s predecessor was known as Gallopin’ Gertie) and drove over it into Gig Harbor. A friend of our just recently moved to Gig Harbor and we were able to meet up with him for dinner.
We had a great time!

We had to go to Fred Meyer tonight to get some things and of course we had to stop at the toy aisle. Magnus wanted to try on this Iron Man mask. I believe he is shooting me with his hand…

Happy Old New Year Eve!
We did not stay up until midnight, but Elina did bring out the poppers she had forgotten to bring out for Real New Years Eve and we opened them up. I think next time we should just get everybody cracker jack, and then we get a tasty treat too!

I made a few new foods tonight. This was taco pizza, per Dana’s request. It ended up delicious.
I also made a yellow cake from scratch which I over beat and it ended up only OK. The frosting was good, though.

Someone with tiny hands damaged some cords on our drum set and it has been out of commission for a few months. We finally got the replacement cord and Dana was able to repair the drum set. And, of course, we had to test the gear to make sure it all played correctly… and try out our new videogame, Lego Rock band. Magnus took his turn on the drums and microphone.

Magnus likes chocolate. So far the favorites are Andes mints, truffles, and nutella.

Happy Old Christmas!
The Soviets had some calendar discrepancies with the rest of the world. No one really celebrates Old Christmas or Old New Years anymore, but we like to remember it.
Magnus actually got a Christmas present in the mail, so that was appropriate. It came from Cheryl and Jae and it was an awesome boat. Magnus’s favorite part was the cannon that shoots little darts. He got very good at loading the cannon and then shooting it. He was not very good at keeping track of where the cannonballs ended up.
Thanks, Cheryl and Jae!

Today was a nice relaxing day. Dana wanted to spend some time in the evening building a big Lego with Magnus. He cleared off the table and got the new Lego out from Christmas. But when he opened it he found this instead of legos. All the little bags were filled with noodles then resealed. The bags were then put back into the box that was then resealed as well. There was even an old magazine instead of instructions. We headed straight for the store and after some scrutiny they believed us and we were able to get a replacement. We could not believe someone went through all that trouble to steal from a store.

Magnus really loves Dana’s minifigures. He is particularly skilled at removing their hats and giving them new hats.

We took advantage of the sunny weather and drove out to Ridgefield to the wildlife refuge. We saw many birds and this muskrat. The trumpeter swans were also in the refuge.

New Years Day 2013! Happy New Year!
We had a lot of fun bringing in the New Year at Farmor’s house with Dana’s family. Everyone made it to midnight, even Magnus. We watched the fireworks on the Space Needle on the computer, then headed home. Dana had to work early in the morning, but we went out for a walk in the afternoon. It was a clear day, so we went to the waterfront. Magnus had fun seeing birds and throwing rocks in the water. It was a nice way to start 2013.
We’re not as prompt or concise as Emily, but here is our video of the pictures this year.

Happy New Year’s Eve!
We got snow! While it technically snowed at our apartment, none of it stuck on the ground. Else’s house had quite the supply, though. Dana went right to work building a snowman. Magnus liked the snow at first and less so when the snowman was up.
We had our cracker feast and had a good time together.
Thanks for the great year, everybody!
