I was out of tricks today so I made oobleck and let Magnus play with it out on the patio. He taste-tested it several times, and each time thought it was yucky. But enjoyed squishing it.

We have a feline visitor that likes to hang out in our yard now. He sleeps on our chairs and generally does what he pleases. He doesn’t mind Dana or I, but Magnus makes him skittish. Here he is sitting just out of reach.

Magnus can climb things now. He’s really only mastered the ottoman, but he’s really mastered it! Imagine him yelling in triumph!

Dana’s friend from high school, Jessica, came into town and we spent the evening with friends visiting. It’s great to see you, Jessica! Come back soon!

We all went out to see the tulips this afternoon. It was beautiful and clear. The flowers were impressive and Magnus liked the rows: just the right size for him! My camera ran out of batteries almost right away and my spare batteries were also dead! Dana found me some batteries and saved the day! Watch the main blog for more pretty tulip pictures.

We went exploring in the hills around Portland today. Dana found this tiny state park that has the Willamette Stone in it. Magnus walked the whole way (and only fell down a few times). It was a pleasant outing.

Recently, we had an idea for a way to display a lot of our photos in a smaller space. It took some work, but we took most of these and made them in to a color mosaic and framed them. Though we like the way the whole set looked on the table.

We gave Magnus a Peeps Chick to try. Following the manner that he eats things, he tried to stuff the whole Peep in his mouth. After much stuffing he just about did it. You will notice that only the Peep’s head is sticking out of his mouth.

On the same visit to the Farmer’s Market that we got the ferns, we bought some fantastic vanilla roasted almonds (it helps that I really love vanilla). Ruth decided she would attempt to make her own. And they turned out pretty good.

When I visit a new place, the souvenir I like to get is a magnet to put on the fridge. On our recent trip, I got a Goblin Valley magnet that Magnus really loves. He loved it so much that he took it and hid it where we could not find it (and we looked everywhere). That was several days ago. Today we were sitting on the couch and Magnus comes dancing in carrying the magnet. He seemed pretty pleased with himself, as you can tell from the picture. And we still don’t know where he hid it. Now if we can only find his missing shoe…

Happy Birthday, Else!
Happy Orthodox Easter!
Since Magnus and I were in Arizona last week, we missed Easter. So, we celebrated it today on Orthodox Easter. We colored eggs, ate delicious candy, and had ham for dinner. We also spent most of the day at my mom’s to celebrate her birthday. Magnus made sure to get a picture with Farmor next to her beautiful rhododendron.

A visit to the mushroom guy at the Farmer’s Market yielded these interesting bite sized things. They are young fiddlehead fern starts. Apparently they are only harvestable about 3 weeks a year. The mushroom guy has given us lots of great suggestions before, so I thought I would try them. They were pretty good, tasting a lot like asparagus, but a little woodier.

Having some fun with bubbles. Magnus was not quite sure what to think of them.
Thursday, April 12th, 2012
While we were gone Ruth had some time to do some art and craft projects. These are just two of them.

Back home to Vancouver! But not before we thanked Uncle Sherman and Aunt Marsha for letting us stay with them for the night. It was a fun trip and I think Magnus was happy to be back with his mom, though when he first saw her he didn’t seem to believe it. And I think Ruth had a nice time with some quiet for a few days.

The adventure continued with a morning hike to House on Fire Ruins in Utah. This is a mostly unknown place that is difficult to find if you don’t know where to look. It is cool because the color and look of the rock gives it the unusual name. The hike was wasn’t bad, but we did get some funny looks from all the “intense” hikers when we strolled by in normal clothes and a baby on my shoulders. To get the right light on the ruins to make them glow you have to get there by about 11 am (before the sun hits them directly). We got there in good time and it looked really cool. We rounded out the day with a visit to Natural Bridges NM and Goblin Valley SP, and sleeping in Salt Lake.

Our trip back to Washington began, but with some detours. Our first big stop was Petrified Forest NP. It was awesome. There was so much petrified wood everywhere. Here we are sitting on a whole tree of it, and all the dark things in the back are also petrified wood. We also stop at Canyon de Chelly NM latter in the evening.

Христос воскрес! Воистину воскрес! Happy Easter!
We had a great time visiting with my good friends the Bates in Arizona. It has been a while since I had seen them and they even got to meet Magnus. Thanks for letting us stay with you and spend Easter with you.

Happy Birthday, Grant!
Magnus and I flew to Arizona to help Elina move back to Washington. Due to limited space in Elina’s car we left Ruth at home to have a nice couple days off. Magnus got to fly for the first time, which he used for an opportunity to take a long nap. My friend Ryan Bates picked us up and we enjoyed a nice day around Mesa and Gilbert. Here is Magnus and a saguaro cactus. Every time he sees this picture, his face lights up and he giggles. I guess I don’t get the joke.

Happy Birthday, Emily!
We went to the local Russian store to get some Pascka bread for Easter. They smelled yummy and we’re excited to have them.

My mom came over to babysit Magnus while we went to see The Hunger Games. As we were preparing to go, we all heard a loud fizz-pop and then the power was out. Going outside to investigate, along with many of the neighbors, we found that a wire had detached itself from the telephone pole and was strung across the main road. This knocked out the power for about two blocks. And since the wire was hard to see, cars kept running into it and dragging it around. So, we decided to send Magnus home with my mom, and we still got to see the movie.

Magnus is trying out eating like a bird, or as Ruth described it, a vacuum cleaner.

Happy April Fools Day!
Magnus gets a ride from Grandpa Ivan! Magnus’s new thing is to peek around at whoever is carrying him on their shoulders. We had fun listening to General Conference and visiting down in Salem. Grandpa was Magnus’s special friend; he knew Grandpa would always pick him up if he asked. Terry made a delicious dinner and we got to see Dana’s step-brother-in-law who is back from deployment in Afghanistan. Thanks for the fun times, everyone!

We drove down to Salem to stay with Ivan and Terry for the weekend. Magnus is very excited!

Finally seeing The Muppets. We loved it! We’ll have to add it to our wish list.
Tuesday, March 27th, 2012
I just finished knitting this cover for my kindle. I have been working on a quilted one for a while and haven’t quite finished yet, but I think this one looks pretty good!

Another fun day at the park. The slide was a little wet from the rain the night before, but Magnus made sure to clean it off.
