We took the opportunity to go to the Portland Rose Garden today. Many other people had the same good idea. But we finished before the big rain came. And the roses were beautiful.

I made plov for dinner tonight. It’s a Russian rice dish with meat and vegetables. I tried to feed it to Magnus but he wanted to do it himself. He was very happy to eat it once he was in charge.

The youth in our ward walked to the temple today. It was 26 miles. These are the first to arrive, around 5:30. It was quite an ordeal but they all did really well.

Magnus loves to use my water bottle. He has some trouble tilting it gently to drink out of it, though. After making this spill on the rug, he lifted the bottle and spilled the remaining water all over his face and shirt.

Target has had some pretty unique gift cards over the years, including a few lego sets. This giftcard came with a hex bug shaped like a caterpillar.

Happy Father’s Birthday to Dana! We went over to Else’s for dinner: chicken and rice, Dana’s favorite. Ruth made a delicious vanilla cake with vanilla bean frosting and strawberry filling. It was good times. Thank you for all the awesome presents.
And Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers we know. You guys are great.

Happy Birthday, Brian!
Camping with Magnus went fairly well. We had a nice relaxing time in the woods and the weather was perfect for it. Today was also my friend Brian’s Birthday, so we had fun spending some time with him. We took him up to Panther Creek Falls (one of my favorites) since he had not been there. It was very nice. He then took us to a lake that he used to swim in, but to his surprise the lake is gone and only a river remains. It was still neat. And I found a cool newt there.

Our Gorge Adventure started nice and early today. We had to be out near The Dalles by 10 am to take the petroglyph tour. It was very cool. This is the main glyph called Tsagaglalal or “She Who Watches.” It is pretty breath-taking when you fist see her. We also hiked to Catherine Creek Arch and found a western skink with a beautiful blue tail. Then we finally made it to Panther Creek Campground. My friend Brian met us there and we had a good time eating shashlik (kebabs) and toasting marshmallows.

We went out to dinner tonight at McGrath’s Fish House with the Jensens for Dana’s birthday dinner. Magnus had fun eating all of Farmor’s food and seeing the lobster tank.

We went down to Gladstone today and bid farewell to the Guptills. Thanks for playing with us! We also looked around Oregon City and saw Willamette Falls, the McLoughlin House, and a vertical street. Fun times.

This train-car was parked outside the store today when I went to buy Dana his birthday presents. It was really big.

Magnus has made a friend in our apartment complex. He is 2 and seems to get along well Magnus. Here they are sharing a bowl of blueberries.
Sunday, June 10th, 2012
We went down to Salem to spend some time with my dad. We celebrated Father’s Day with him since he would be out of town the following week. Here we are playing a little croquette. Anton won both times, even with a baby on him for a few shots.

The Guptills came up to Vancouver today and we had fun visiting the Farmer’s Market and Fort Vancouver. Thanks for playing with us, Guptills!

Elina came over tonight and brought Just Dance 2 and Zumba. Magnus liked the music and sometimes let us dance without holding him. What a sport.
Thursday, June 7th, 2012
The Guptills are in town! We drove down to Gladstone after Dana got out of work and hung out with the Guptills. Magnus and Grant had a good time visiting and poking each other in the face. Good times.

Magnus really like his rubber bouncing cow that he got from my mom. He now asks to get on it, but still needs assistance to get off.

The Transit of Venus is an interesting event where Venus passes in between the Sun and Earth. It is a rare astronomical event that happens in pairs 8 years apart (the last one was in June 2004) separated by over 100 years (the next pair starts in December 2117). We went to the local college to witness this event. This is picture is of a reflection of the sun magnified through a telescope. The dot on the top right is Venus. If you make the photo larger you can see two smaller dots near the middle, these are sun spots. It was neat to see and there was a good group there to see it. We are just glad the clouds cleared away long enough.

This morning I went to go grab something in the bedroom and when I came back, this is what he was doing. The couches are now part of his domain.

We went to the Lego Convention today in Portland. It was a gathering of Lego fans and their creations. There really was some amazing models. We really liked this London Bridge. Some other good ones were the clock tower from Back to the Future, a giant praying mantis, Kermit the Frog, and a huge Helms Deep battle seen from Lord of the Rings.

I made these for dinner tonight. They’re called “uszka,” which is Polish for “little ears.” They are a mushroom dumpling served in broth. Very yummy! We also went to Anton’s dessert night and ate some yummy trifles and cheesecakes.

Day two at the coast: We enjoyed looking at the Yaquina Head lighthouse, where we saw lots of seabirds and a large group of seals. We then headed south to Cape Perpetua to see the Devil’s Churn and its tide pools. And then Thor’s Well and the Sea Spout. Here is Ruth and little Thor checking out his well. It is a large hole with a tunnel open to the ocean, so water will rush in making loud booming noises often followed by a big splash. It was pretty cool.

Ivan and Terry invited us to spend some time at the coast with them and we gladly accepted. We spent most of the day in Neskowin playing in the sand and water and walking amongst the Ghost Forest. This is a 2000 year old forest that has been unearthed by the waves and now sits in the surf. Here are two of the ancient trees with Proposal Rock in the distance.

Magnus is a pro at sitting. We got this chair for him a while ago. He has taken a new liking to it since he can now climb up in it. Every time he sits in it he gets a big smile on his face. We think he knows that it is his own special chair.

Memorial Day!
Did some grocery shopping today. Walmart is infamous for having slow lines and today was even worse. Dana and Magnus went and played with some pool noodles while I checked out.
Sunday, May 27th, 2012
Magnus got this sweet bouncy rubber cow from my mom for his birthday. He likes to point at its face and smile and talk to it. He hasn’t quite gotten the knack of bouncing on it yet. I’m sure that’ll come.
