The carpet cleaners. They were very nice. We hid out on the island of our bed until they left. Then I went to Else’s house and Dana went to work. When we got home the carpets were clean and dry.

Lame picture day. Sorry, guys. The carpet shampooers are coming tomorrow so I spent the evening getting as much off the floor as possible.

Farmor and Elina came over for a visit this evening. We all took turns trying on the Viking helmet, but it looks the best on Magnus.

Emily got us some tasty treats from the Harry Potter park in Florida. Here is a chocolate frog. It’s about the size of the palm of your hand and it’s solid. Our frog card was Helga Hufflepuff. Thanks, Guptills! We ate it as we watched Mazes and Monsters. The chocolate was much better than the movie.

Magnus has had this sweater for a few months and I’m so excited it finally fits him. Although he does remind me of Mr. Rogers…

Magnus practices his force powers. “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for…”

The Teeth. He has quite the bite and I have stopped letting him chew on my fingers before he removes one of them.

Happy Birthday, Ryan!
A snapshot from Dana at work. He gets to put all of these away all day!

We went to Powell’s today. It’s much easier to spend less time there when you have a Magnus with you. He was well-behaved, though.

Construction has begun next door. If you didn’t know, while we were on vacation there was a fire in the apartments next to ours. Both apartments are being gutted and refurbished. We are very grateful to the firemen who responded quickly and stopped the fire before it spread to our apartment.

Egg Nog has arrived! The white stuff is Frog-eye salad, which sounds gross but which I discovered at a ward get-together recently and now make about once a week. I’ll put the recipe on the food blog eventually. (There is no egg nog in the salad).

Our first day at home was a busy one. I went to Super Saturday and made crafts and marzipan candy. Dana went shooting with Anton’s Elder’s Quorum in the mountains. We were both pleased to find out our local historic movie theater has finally reopened and has been nicely refurbished. We took Magnus and watched Amelie in the evening.

Day 12: The last day. We arrived home safely in Vancouver this evening. Magnus did fairly well in the car this whole trip, though he is definitely not best friends with his car seat. He spent enough time in the car and decided that he should do the driving for a bit, so we gave him a chance at a rest stop. But he failed at looking where he was going and not eating the steering wheel. But we still love him.
We are all glad to be home.

Day 11: The drive home. We made it to Boise and stopped at my Aunt Mary’s to stay the night. My Grantpa lives with her now so we were happy to see him too. He and Magnus were especially happy to be together. I think they have a similar smile. We love you, Grant-pa!

Day 10: In Salt Lake City we had a chance to go to the observation deck of the Church Office Building. The view was very clear. Ruth and Magnus had never been up there before. It wasn’t busy, so the tour guide let us look out a south facing window, not usually open to the public. The guide also recommended we visit the South Visitor Center where they have this miniature of the temple with the wall cut away. Every detail of the inside has been carefully recreated (including the pictures on the wall, furniture, and even the gold leaf), so visitors can see what the inside looks like. It was neat.
We also got the chance to see some of our friends (and their kids) who still live in Utah. It was a busy day.

Day 9: Magnus meets Governor Gary Herbert of Utah! We went to the grand reopening of the Dinosaur Quarry, with its wall of bones, in Dinosaur NM. It was 96 years to the day since it became a monument. The governor was the featured speaker and cut the ceremonial ribbon. Magnus fell asleep during the ceremony but he still got us to the front of the line to meet the governor. The costume may have helped…

Day 8: We made it to Dinosaur National Monument and hiked to Harper’s Corner. This is where the Green and Yampa Rivers meet and they cut a pretty canyon in the rock. We found fossils and interesting things in the rocks. The view was pretty cool; we could see rafters on the river below.
We stayed the night in Vernal and got a chance to see the temple. I was impressed by Vernal’s human to dinosaur statue ratio (although there were no dinosaur statues at the temple).

Day 7: After saying good-bye to Emily and the kids we headed north and west again. We made a stop in Loveland to see Dana’s aunt, Ileane. We then went into the mountains. The road through Rocky Mountain NP brought us above 12,000 ft. This is Dana at Rock Cut (12,300 ft.), a short hike near the top of the road. The mountains were beautiful, but the park was a bit busy, due to Elk Fest in Estes Park. We saw some neat wildlife, and the changing colors of fall.

Day 6: Magnus and Grant had fun getting to know each other. It is interesting to see the similarities and differences, since they are so close in age.

Day 5: We had a busy day. We began by visiting the Florissant Fossil Beds (our second fossil themed stop). This place is famous for its insect and plant fossils, including petrified Redwood trees. We hiked around there a bit and then found a place outside the monument that let you find your own fossils. Here we are trying to uncover some ancient treasures. We then visited a Insect Museum that also had a Space Museum we could see.

Day 4: A visit to the mile high city was a nice outing. We went to see the US Mint and the Colorado State House. Here Magnus is wondering why his room can’t be more like the Capitol’s Dome. We ended the day with a quick stop at the Denver Temple to wait out some of the evening traffic.

Day 3: Our first day in Colorado Springs. Emily took us to Garden of the Gods. I was surprised at how close it was. We went while Matthew was in school. It was a beautiful place of odd rock formations. This is a view into the Garden from above. We had a good time walking amongst the rocks as well.
Tuesday, September 27th, 2011
Day 2: We stopped at Fossil Butte National Monument in Wyoming on our way to Colorado. It’s a 50 Million year old lake bed. In specific layers of the rock there are many many fossils. Lots of fish and plants. It was a nice stop on our long drive. We got to Colorado Springs late that night, and Matthew was ready to run downstairs to greet us.

Day 1 of our road trip. Magnus woke up to eat around 3. At 4 we put him into the car seat and drove away. The sun was just coming up as we were leaving the Gorge and the windmills looked pretty in silhouette. We stayed at Uncle Sherman’s house that night in Riverton, UT. It was a long day.

The seeds that grew these sunflowers are 2 years old. I did not think they would even sprout. Needless to say, they exceeded expectations, although they bloomed when they got about 3 feet high instead of 6.
